Polyethylene Terephthalate Glycol-Modified (PETG) filament is known for its strength and flexibility.
- High impact resistance
- Low warping compared to ABS
- Good chemical resistance
- Ideal for clear or transparent prints
PETG (Polyethylene Terephthalate Glycol-modified) is a popular 3D printing filament known as the perfect middle ground between PLA and ABS. It combines PLA's ease of printing with ABS's strength and durability. The 'G' stands for glycol-modified, which prevents the plastic from becoming brittle and makes it clearer than standard PET (used for soda bottles).
Key Properties of PETG
High heat resistance: Maintains its shape up to 80–90 °C, whereas PLA deforms around 60 °C.
Impact-resistant and tough: Less brittle than PLA due to its slight mechanical flexibility.
Weather and UV resistant: Excellent for outdoor use because it does not degrade under sunlight.
Chemical resistance: Highly resistant to water, acids, and chemicals.
Odorless printing: Emits virtually no odor while melting and does not require an enclosure like ABS.
Common Applications
PETG is ideal for functional and mechanical parts. Typical uses include:
Outdoor objects like garden tool components or protective housings.
Mechanical parts such as brackets, gears, and clamps.
Waterproof items like planters or bottles due to its excellent layer adhesion.
General Printing Guidelines
Nozzle temperature: 220 °C – 260 °C
Bed temperature: 65 °C – 90 °C
Print bed surface: Use a release agent (like glue stick or 3DLAC) on smooth PEI or glass. PETG bonds so strongly that it can rip chunks out of your print bed.
Drawbacks to Consider
Stringing and oozing: PETG is very fluid when hot, which often leads to fine plastic hairs (stringing) on the model.
Moisture-sensitive (Hygroscopic): It quickly absorbs moisture from the air. Wet filament causes bubbles and poor print quality, so you often need to dry it before use.
